Treatment for Chronic Back Pain
Almost all chronic back pain patients have a long treatment history and have already been treated by various care providers (for example, a GP, (manual) physiotherapist, neurologist, psychologist, chiropractor, pain doctor, rheumatologist, etc.).
Many patients are fortunate to find pain relief from a variety of therapies at the care providers mentioned above. However, this is not always the case. When pain relief is not found, then the patient is eligible for holistic rehabilitation. We often see that the quality of life deteriorates drastically as years of back pain progress. Working and exercising are hardly possible because there is too much pain reaction after or during exercise. This has negative consequences for daily life activities. Confidence in one’s own body is affected. In many cases, there is a fear of moving. The (muscle) condition decreases and the periods without pain become shorter and shorter or even disappear altogether. It is logical that this affects a person’s state of mind. Pain causes a lot of negative energy and social activity becomes limited. A consequence of this is the incomprehension of the family, friends, and relatives that can lead to unpleasant situations. In short, the pain becomes central and the world around it grows smaller and smaller. We speak of a vicious circle that must be broken.
The treatment of chronic pain consists of the bio-psycho-social model. This approach not only considers the back but also takes into account the social and psychological conditions.
