Non-specific low back pain
Non-specific low back pain treatment
Specific Low Back Pain is often experienced as ‘sudden shooting pain in the back’, which gives a painful and cramped feeling in the back. If back pain persists for more than three months, the pain becomes chronic (Non specific Low Back Pain). The treatment of chronic back pain is different from acute back pain treatment.
Go directly to:
Common Acute Low Back Pain symptoms
- Sharp and shooting pain
- Rigidity
- Restriction of movement in the lower back
- Radiating pain (in the buttocks/thighs)
- Prolonged sitting is painful
- Not being able to get up
Common Non-Specific Back Pain symptoms
- Sharp and shooting pain
- Rigidity
- Restriction of movement of the back
- Radiating pain (in the buttocks/thighs)
- Prolonged sitting is painful
- Not being able to get up
- Depressive feelings
- Fewer and fewer periods without pain
Causes of Acute Low Back Pain
An Acute Low Back Pain attack depends on several factors. When the joint chain of the lower back does not work together properly, this causes Low Back Pain (lumbago). A few examples of risk factors for lumbago include:
- Overburdened back (work / driving / tension)
- Moving the (lower) back incorrectly (for a long time)
- Sudden movement (bending or twisting of the back)
- Stress
- Doing untrained heavy work
- Poor physical condition (passive)
- Presence of a hernia in the (lower) back
Causes of Non Specific Low Back Pain
Chronic pain can be a consequence of many factors including:
- Stress
- Work stress
- Life events
- Money issues
- Bad relationships
- Mental condition
Treatment for Acute Low Back Pain
Acute Low Back Pain often passes by itself, but that does not solve the cause of the problem. With acute Low Back Pain, it is wise not to seek out the pain, but to keep moving. The real problem is that residual damage remains, which can manifest itself as, among other things, ‘instability’ of the (lower) back or permanent complaints.
Several factors can be the cause of your (acute) back pain. For example, your daily lifestyle with incorrect use of your back can be the cause of your back pain. A back/spine expert will make it clear to you where your complaints come from so that you too can understand what the cause of your back complaints really is. Subsequently, a personal treatment plan will be drawn up that suits you.
Treatment for Non Specific Low Back Pain
Almost all chronic back pain patients have a long treatment history and have already been treated by various care providers (for example, a GP, (manual) physiotherapist, neurologist, psychologist, chiropractor, pain doctor, rheumatologist, etc.).
Many patients are fortunate to find pain relief from a variety of therapies at the care providers mentioned above. However, this is not always the case. When pain relief is not found, then the patient is eligible for holistic rehabilitation. We often see that the quality of life deteriorates drastically as years of back pain progress. Working and exercising are hardly possible because there is too much pain reaction after or during exercise. This has negative consequences for daily life activities. Confidence in one’s own body is affected. In many cases, there is a fear of moving. The (muscle) condition decreases and the periods without pain become shorter and shorter or even disappear altogether. It is logical that this affects a person’s state of mind. Pain causes a lot of negative energy and social activity becomes limited. A consequence of this is the incomprehension of the family, friends, and relatives that can lead to unpleasant situations. In short, the pain becomes central and the world around it grows smaller and smaller. We speak of a vicious circle that must be broken.
The treatment of chronic pain consists of the bio-psycho-social model. This approach not only considers the back but also takes into account the social and psychological conditions.
