In recent years, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease has increased worldwide. Research from the European hearth network* (2017) concludes that each year cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes 3.9 million deaths in Europe and over 1.8 million deaths in the European Union (EU). CVD accounts for 45% of all deaths in Europe and 37% of all deaths in the EU.[1] The network has advised to also monitor cardiovascular health during rehabilitation. Other recent research also shows that a better condition has a positive effect on the recovery of musculoskeletal disorders.
Cardio testing
With the new cardio testing feature, EVE can be used to evaluate cardiovascular health and its progress. This supports David’s long-term goal of designing products that help our end customers in a holistic manner.
The submaximal validated cardio testing (IPN) is safe, fast, and easy to perform. The test can be performed with the medical versions of David Cycle requires a Polar heart belt.
During the test heart rate levels are recorded as the resistance level increases automatically at a precalculated pace. The test ends when the predetermined heart rate threshold is reached. The result values are compared to validated reference values and an IPN-score of 1-5 is given. The system also calculates an indirect VO2Max value and recommended training heart rates for various cardio devices.
Cardio test report with graphical displays
A graphical test report visualizing heart rate progression, step power levels, and results can be generated. It includes progression trendlines if multiple tests have been performed. Cardio test results are also automatically included in the EVE case reports with other test results.
What is a validated IPN cardio test?
The IPN test is a sub-maximal test procedure, which means that the patient does not make an all-out effort. This is particularly important in the context of rehabilitation training, where most patients cannot yet fully exert themselves.
The results assess cardio performance in terms of five fitness levels that range from “significantly below average” (Level 1) to “significantly above average” (Level 5). The results are applied directly to cardio training: the IPN test calculates optimum training heart rates to ensure that training intensity remains within the appropriate range. After the test, subjects are told what heart-rate values are ideal for their specific endurance-training programs.
Display of test results
In the Cardio report the IPN, Vo2max, and PWC 130 scores are visually displayed.
Recommendations for resuming cardio workouts
On the basis of test results, recommendations are made for training courses. It is wise to slowly build up the training for patients by means of aerobic training or extensive interval training. Intensive interval training is only recommended for trained people. In the case of obesity, a fat burning program can be started. The report also shows the person’s aerobic age.
This EVE update allows our global customers and partners to test the cardio levels of patients. This can then help physiotherapists to build individualized training programs with their patients to reach specific goals. Whether it be for musculoskeletal rehabilitation, preventing injuries, or maintaining fitness maintenance we continue to develop EVE to support the patient’s journey.
